Well, the day has past, the nervousness, stress, and butterflies have all gone, but the echoes of little voices (come sit with me, Ms. Brooke, come to recess, Ms. Brooke, eat lunch at our table, Ms. Brooke) still resonate in my head. My first day at Pinecrest Public School was everything I expected and more. At 8:00 am, Spencer, Mena, and I were warmly greeted by Ms. Bergquist, who gave us quick tour of the school. I think it's safe to say that all three of us agreed that Pinecrest is a beautiful school. The big classrooms, with large windows are extremely welcoming, which allows for the students to learn in a safe and nurturing environment. As most, my AT was extremely helpful, and answered all my questions and reassured me about my concerns.
At 8:30 am, Ms. Bergquist and I went downstairs to greet the students. The way Ms. Bergquist interacted with the students is quite amazing and motivating to say the least. She is patient, but also passionate about teaching. The students respect her, and I believe are truly grateful to have her not only as an educator and teacher, but also as a friend. We didn't waste any time, and on the first day, I was already teaching a math lesson to the student (skip counting was the lesson of the day.) Although I was nervous, I knew I had to fully immerse myself in this amazing opportunity. As I reflect upon my day, I few concerns do cross my mind. First, I wonder if the students will ever see me as a teacher. Although yesterday was my first day, I realize that some students do not take me seriously and do not see me as a teacher. I do believe, however, as the students become more familiar with me, they will begin to recognize me as a teacher. For now, I am happy to help facilitate Ms. Bergquist with any tasks she has for me. As 3:00pm approached, I was burned out (running around a group a grade 3 and 4 students in a pencil skirt and high heels is quite difficult). But, with more appropriate clothes, I am ready to face next Wednesday head on, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year at Pinecrest has in store for me.
